Today were going to discuss refinishing existing oak cabinets with general finishes gel stain dubbed the one coat wonder by amy from high style restyle in dallas because of its exceptional coverage.
Use a foam brush to apply the gel stain in the direction of the wood grain. Reapply stain and varnishes in thin coats to achieve darker colors allowing adequate drying time between each coat. While gel stain does go on thick and sit on the surface of the wood i found that you can still see and feel the natural wood grain beneath unlike paint. Gel stains provide great coverage over existing finishes because they are full bodied and pigment rich.
However there is no way i would attempt using gel stain on my kitchen cabinets as others have. Use a tack cloth to wipe away all the sanding dust from the surface. Gel stain will not require you to sand the product to a raw wood finish. Whereas with gel stain the stain sits on top of the wood.
Maybe it was my oak cabinets but i have never had so much trouble getting something to look even. I would lightly sand cabinets with 220 grit and wipe clean of any dust. To give a little background on gel stain versus regular stain when using regular wood stain or thin liquid stain it actually penetrates into the wood. Gel stain is very user friendly to work with.
