How To Finish Birch Kitchen Cabinets

Step 3 apply your finish.
There is no free lunch. For a minimalist look leave your birch kitchen cabinets in its natural honey color. Brush on a light coat and wipe away any excess with a clean rag. It is imperative that your sanding motion is in the same direction as the grain of the birch otherwise you will end up scratching the surface of your birch cabinets.
After filling the holes spot finish the putty with shellac water based polyurethane won t stick to the putty. Continue applying coats of paint allowing a drying time of 24 to 48 hours between coats until you achieve the color and coverage desired on the cabinets. As birch wood cabinets have a fine grain sanding should also be carefully done. Birch has a tendency to get splotchy with darker patches in some areas.
Gel is thicker and will penetrate the wood more evenly. Prevent this by using a gel stain and go slowly. Sand between coats but not after the final coat. Do this very very carefully.

To match the color exactly mix two or more shades of oil based wood putty. I have the most luck staining birch with waterborne spray stains typically dye but pigment works as well. Repeat this process for a total of three or four coats. Let the finish dry as directed.
You can spray the stain with a 1 quart pressurized spray gun and spray the cabinet doors and drawers. Fold up one of your applicator rags into a square dip it into the polyurethane and rub the finish onto the cabinet surfaces. Birch cabinets are perfect for a rustic kitchen with distressed or stained finishes. Lightly sand all surfaces with 220 grit sandpaper and wipe off all sanding dust.
Remove all the doors and drawers from the cabinet. Thick coats of paint tend to develop runs and do not dry evenly. Fill the old hardware holes in the doors with oil or water based wood filler drawers and cabinet frames after the final coat of finish is dry. Apply your first coat of enamel paint using a brush working in thin even coats of paint.
