I had the idea that i could use a tinted topcoat like minwax s polyshades to darken the wood same technique i used on my old kitchen table.
I recommend trying this on scrap pieces of wood first. Since oak s large pores readily accept stain the longer you leave the stain on the wood the darker the final color is. So stain it is. There was absolutely no way i was going to attempt to strip all the existing stain and finish off this vanity plus i was looking to minimize some of the oak grain.
This will seal in the color protect your cabinets and add a shiny varnished look. We also had that darned arched top to consider as well which meant it was drinking painting time. Wipe away excess stain moving in the direction of the grain with a clean. If the cabinets are oiled rather than varnished you could clean them then use a slightly darker stain or oil.
Let sit for just a bit wipe off excess with lint free cloth let dry. Somehow it works correctly upside down facing straight up and in all other directions you find yourself awkwardly wielding a drill when working in tiny spaces. Clean the cabinets with a strong degreasing cleaner and rinse off the residue with a damp sponge. Twist it right it tightens.

Mix grey paint and poly 50 50 and paint on cabs. If it isn t you can repeat the process for a second layer. Leave it heavy and it leans dark almost black. If the cabinets are varnished you can clean them thoroughly and prep them so they will take a varnish if you don t know how to do this go online for a tutorial or ask at a store that works with paints and varnishes.
Dulling the polyurethane lightly with fine grit sandpaper encourages the new stain or paint to. Allow your stain to dry and check it s as dark as you d like.
